Know fellow wine-lovers who are about to be parents? Remind them to lay down wine, for their soon-to-be-born child. Because, beautiful tradition.

Know fellow wine-lovers who are about to be parents? Parched rules and etiquette hereby dictate you recommend and remind them to lay down a bottle / a case / a cellar full of wine, for their soon-to-be-born child.

Sometimes people expect the children to open the bottles on their 21st birthday, or for their college graduation, or their wedding day. But the idea is the same: a case of wine that will mature gracefully and gain some wisdom, symbolically mirroring the child. And, of course, each bottle will be a memory of the giver of the wine and a reflection of their hopes and dreams for the child when he or she was born.

So, what would we recommend? It’s a very difficult question to answer, because we’re being asked to suggest something that will be good 20 years down the road or more. That said, 20 years isn’t nearly as long as it seems when it comes to wine. Many Bordeaux from 1982 are still great. And a case of 1980 California Cabernet Sauvignon would be a delicious present for anyone turning 21 this year. Read More

For wine enthusiasts, one of the great advantages of expecting a child is that you have a bona fide excuse to buy a case of really good wine to lay down for 20+ years. What’s more, for trigger-happy, instant-gratification types like me, the intention of giving the wine to my child when he or she attains drinking age, and the possibility of enjoying it with him or her 25 years down the road, provide a powerful incentive against succumbing to the temptation to dip into the stash early, which too often happens with other wine I’m trying to age.
