DRINK HERE: BAR UVA

19 Oct 2021 By

[Closed For Good] Another Wine Bar, You Say? More than that, we say. Here are Five Reasons to Drink at Purvis Street’s Latest Hang.

Uva means “grape” in Italian, Spanish and Portuguese…but you knew that already. What we don’t know could fill a very big Jancis Robinson tome, but what we do know is Bar Uva has a curated wine list that’s inviting and inexpensive (read: value for money). That’s enough reason to go in our books. Here are some more:

• It matters what you drink, but it also matters where you drink — and we are partial to great design. Bar Uva’s interior is a intimate blend of wood, metal and stark simplicity, offering the kind of modern cosiness we can spend many hours in—the unpretentious vibe is intended. “There have been too many rules and wrong perceptions of wines, and we want to change that!” according to managing partner Colin Chia (also Nutmeg & Clove). “Wines should be enjoyed and not be complicated. We also believe there should be space for all types of wines under one roof, and consumers should not be made to choose where to go on days they feel like natural wines or traditional wines.”

• The wine list as mentioned is curated, mostly from the little black book of their wine consultant (an industry stalwart we’re not sure we can name). He’s brought in many boutique labels and varietals you won’t see elsewhere (Chinese chardonnay, a Lebanese blend). There’s a section for natural wines, naturally.

• We did mention the wines are affordable; it’s mostly under $100/bottle and is quality quaff. There are premium wines for sure and it escalates but are worth their value: a dry white Y d’Yquem 2019 (Pauillac) for $318++; Chateau Pontet Canet (Pauillac 2017) at $260++; and Alter Ego (Margeaux 2017) for $210++. You won’t fine top shelf wines at these prices elsewhere unless your family owns a vineyard.

• The food leans towards rich, grilled, saucy and meats. Spring for the Tiger Prawns or Kyujukushima Oyster with Tomato Sherry and Herring Roe (above). There are many delightful small plates as well, love the Churros with Truffle Queso.

• You can also buy retail to go. See the bottles hanging at the top of page? They’re waiting for you at 20% less and no service charges. We found for ourselves this Kiwi beauty.

We are sad that their insane opening special promotion will be over end Oct: $30++ for two hours of free flow between 3-6.30pm. But as it is, Bar Uva is pretty special already. And they are right, wines—unlike Facebook statuses— shouldn’t be complicated; this beacon is bringiing some light to the drinking culture, and we’re happy for that.

Get uva there soon (yes, we said it).
