FANTASTIC MUSIC + GOOD COCKTAILS
30 Aug 2017 By David Fuhrmann-Lim
Here’s an Unexpected Place to Find Good Cocktails at Fantastic Value in a Unique Space.
KILO LOUNGE
You don’t normally expect good cocktails in a club; it’s not a place where care is taken with the construction of a Pisco Sour or Corpse Reviver. Their metier is house pours, beers and that cauldron of sewage – the Long Island Iced Tea.
So it’s with some delight to find out that one club is righting that anomaly, especially if that club is one of our favourites as well: Kilo Lounge has a solid rotation of killer jocks, the soundsystem is dope, the crowd is grown-up and there’s no pretense (you won’t find sparklers on champagne bottles here). That’s our ringing endorsement. Here’s the lowdown on the cocktails (which are mostly under $20!).
Spiced Apple Martini ($20): Apple cinnamon infused bourbon, lime juice and egg white. Not a traditional martini per se, this one is shaken and is far from dry. But it is delish and too easy to down, as the spice is subtle and honest. Thumbs up.
Kilo’s New Fashion ($20): Vanilla bean infused bourbon, bitters, orange peel, smoking cinnamon stick. The stick’s a bit showy, but the drink is good, a bit sweet though, which can be adjusted. Overall, nicely done.
Macha Sake ($16): Kiku-masamune sake, macha infused gin, orange, green tea powder, egg white. Another shaken cocktail that’s pretty much a macha mouthful, not a bad thing if you like tea and believe in its miraculous goodness. I like it for its fresh flavours. Thumbs up.
New York Sour ($19): Bourbon, Malbec, lemon. Do you drink it quicly or watch it slowly turn into an expressionist artwork? I drank it slowly.
On most nights, the lounge is a cocktail bar (the dance floor is shuttered). And as we mentioned, the music here rules, and the door policy is friendly. The club has hosted DJs like Arado, DJ Yadin, Joe Kay, DJ Tennis, Hot Chip; a host of local jocks like Mr. Has, Aldrin, and Brendon P, plus hip-hop legends Grandmaster Flash and The Pharcyde. If you’re here and don’t fancy another draught beer, there are a few cocktails with your name on it.
Kilo Lounge, 21 Tanjong Pagar Road.
