TRAVEL: THE AVIARY HOTEL
20 Mar 2024 By David Fuhrmann-Lim
The Aviary Hotel is a Modern, Convenient Nest in Siem Reap For Those Looking For a Perch in the Heart of The City.
From hostels to homestays to high-end hotels, there’s no shortage of accommodation in Siem Reap, even as the tourists trickle back into this historic city. The visit to Angkor Wat is a given, so for wanderers, there’s only one question: do I find a hotel nearer to the Wat and temples, for stay in the city for easy access to shopping and the infamous Pub Street?
The Aviary Hotel is a fly option if you prefer the latter. The eco-friendly hotel has all the mod cons and more: two swimming pools, four F&B options (Plumage for breakfast, Glide Bar for evening drinks, Flock Café for coffee, juices and treats, and Fumizen for classic Japanese dishes including their signature tonkatsu), plus a spa and gym. The dining options rule when it’s too hot to get out in the day.
From decor to artwork to theme, the bird motif is all over this boutique hotel.
The new annex/wing — completed last year — has a lush garden, additional suites and a rooftop pool. 👇🏼
Which, conveniently, is next to the rooftop Glide Bar, the ideal spot for evening drinks!
The best time to visit the bar is just before sunset, so you can snag a spot to check out the action at the pool or get a primo view of the sun disappearing into the horizon. (Happy hour is 5 pm – 7 pm.) Feeling parched after a day of temple exploration? Check out their list of dependable classics.
The Mojito is ravishing and refreshing, and, according to bartender Rin Vireak, this is the perfect drink for a celebration as “it has a unique sweet and sour taste and is best enjoyed in the company of friends or family.”
I rather like the Whisky Sour, which got me talking to the bartender, who informs me that the menu is classic, enjoyable and authentic. When I asked him what was the weirdest thing ever stolen from the bar, I was told it was the previous bartender! “Someone had fallen in love with the barman and poached him from the bar.”
I didn’t try the barman’s signature Pina Colada and instead opted for the Manhattan, which — minus the garnish – was pretty spot on and a great way to end the evening.
Good to know: The Aviary has an accompanying mall with four curated brands to reflect the hotel’s commitment to design and exclusivity. From upcycled accessories to haute dresses, the shops provide feel-good shopping and another respite from the heat.
Like its namesake, the diversity of birdlife native to the Kingdom of Cambodia is celebrated through avian motifs. Locally inspired, unique artworks can be found throughout the hotel’s 43 rooms. The vibe in each is fun and modern, with a touch of whimsy — with swings, quirky lamps and odd layouts.
