SUPPER CLUB

27 Jul 2017 By

It’s past midnight and you gotta eat. Where should you go? This place.

We’ve got a few good reasons why you should head to Adrift by David Myers for late night supper. (And one reason why you shouldn’t go.)

The new late night menu is available till 2am and it tends to attract a certain sort. You’ll find bar flies who may have been dining around the Marina Bay area and need a night cap. There’s also the party crew who want a pick-me-up on route to another killer club. And you might also find chefs from other restaurants who want a bite after their long shifts (chefs have to eat too, and usually outside their own kitchens).

So, what’s happening here from 12mn to 2am that you should know about?

The cocktails! (True, but more of that later). For the food, obviously.

Adrift Seafood Platter supper club

The menu is pretty wicked: The good stuff is great; the not-so-good stuff is to be avoided, but you’re still left with plenty of options.

The Abalone Sushi ($17 with wasabi and sudachi), Spicy Big Eye Tuna Maki ($13, with leek and yakinori) and Tempura Crab & Avocado Maki Roll ($19) are all a class above. They’re all the right kind of savoury for this time of night, and are your “Must Haves” along with the King Crab Melt, Iberico Pork Chop and Tamarind Chicken. To that list add a few oysters as well.

Adrift Wagyu Cheeseburger supper club

The Wagyu Burger and Fries ($28, above), and Beef Tartare ($18, Korean style, with sesame and miso egg yolk), fall into the second category of… “Hearty But Will Make You Happy” kind of food. It’s past midnight, how heavy do you wanna go?

Then these are the ones to be avoided: Soboro Rice, and Stuffed Zucchini Flower… Just… don’t.

So, the hits (plenty of them) are worth your time and money, the middling ones will serve its purpose. If you can’t decide, just spring for the Seafood Platter ($75) and book your gym sess for the next day.

The cocktails

lawn dart cocktail adrift

As with all sessions, always give the house menu a chance before you fixate on your favourites. So I started with the Lawn Dart (foreground), a fresh and vegetal tasting cocktail with bourbon, lime and mint. Quite pleased with it.

Adrift cocktail Harajuku

Also great are the Penicillin (their signature) and the Harajuku (above), which is smoky and strong and spirit forward. The bar program is pretty solid and the bartender can easily do the classics or variations; I love my Mezcalgroni and Vesper.

Wine tip: The Pitchfork Rosé will surprise you.

So my one bugbear? The music. It’s loud, and a bit one-note, very shouty hiphop and busy house numbers. I’ve boycotted bars where they just don’t get the music right, so this might be veering in that direction. The supper menu and cocktails though, are at the moment good enough I can overlook it. (Here’s a great playlist)

Drinking game: Everyone takes a big gulp each time someone can identify a chef at the next table.
