Interview: We catch up over oysters and Bowmore whisky, with Gordon Dundas, Global Brand Ambassador, Travel Retail at Beam Suntory, to hear more about their bold return – for the first time in five years – to age statements.
Just launched: Travel retail-exclusive Bowmore age statement range.
We catch up over oysters and whisky with Gordon Dundas, Global Brand Ambassador, Travel Retail at Beam Suntory, to hear more about this bold return – for the first time in five years – to age statements. (Also, it’s our sneaky way of sampling the range of new single malts without having to buy an air ticket.)
Parched: Do share with us what you personally think of this new travel range, and how to distinguish it from your domestic line 10YO, 15YO and 18 YO.
Gordon: We created this range with the world traveller in mind. The 10YO is a sociable one. It offers baked orange and toasted maple on the nose, and it goes well with with social icons like coffee, cigars, chocolate, and is at a great price-point which lends itself to being shared easily…
Oh yes, definitely getting that toasted maple… what about the 15YO? It’s our personal favourite by the way…
Gordon: I can have the 15YO anytime of the day; it is typically Bowmore.
[In the meanwhile we were gesturing for more oysters and a top up of the 15 year old.]
And the 18?
Gordon: Ah, the 18YO… It has a rich intensity to it. It is more complex. You see, I am a firm believer that you drink different whiskies at different times. with this, I see myself in a winged-back leather chair, maybe a fire in the background, there is the smell of food, fire, wood…
So we see! 10YO for sharing with strangers, 15YO for sharing with great friends and great food, and the 18YO when the party’s over, and you have some time to yourself…?
Gordon: That’s one way to put it!
Tasting Notes:
Bowmore 10yo offers an ‘intense’ depth from the marriage of Spanish oak sherry casks and hogsheads, which results in a dark amber liquid. The spirit offers hints of sun-dried fruit, baked Seville orange and toasted maple on the nose before giving way to sultanas, sea salt and dark fruit oils on the palette.
Bowmore 15yo is married in first fill bourbon casks. The golden barley coloured whisky features a refreshing, silken peat smoked character with notes of citrus.
Bowmore 18yo, described as “deep and complex”, is matured in oloroso and Pedro Ximénez sherry casks. The whisky offers flavours of treacle coffee, dates and bittersweet orange peel before evolving to roasted coffee and macademia nuts.
This range is inspired by Bowmore distillery’s No.1 Vaults, the world’s oldest Scotch maturation warehouse, and is now available exclusively in global travel retail.
