BEER SPA FTW!

05 Aug 2014 By

“Beer + spa” = BOOM. We’re naked. Soaking it in. Welcome to Prague where they’ve had bliss-by-beer all figured out since the Middle Ages.

In the Czech Republic beer baths are a full-scale trend.

Here’s the marketing rhetoric, designed to get you naked by the end of the paragraph:

“The positive effects of a beer bath include detoxification, improved blood circulation, and a strengthened immune system. In addition, it can calm the nervous system, reduce stress, support the gastro-immune system, treat indigestion and relieve joint pain. To top that all off, Beer baths have an extremely positive effect on your skin and hair, aiding skin regeneration and improving hair health and appearance.

As your guide leads you down the stairs into an underground chamber, expect him to explain further:

“The steam from the hot bath opens the pores so the skin absorbs the minerals from the beer. Smell it, breathe it, it’s aromatherapy as well… the hops also do wonders for the hair. It’s a unified system.  During your stay here with us, you are invited to drink as much unpasteurized beer as you can. It’s so good for you. Welcome again to beer spa, treating you from the outside and the inside.”

On hindsight, In high-efficiency Asia, we’d say the same with much lesser words!

“Aromatic Beer Bath, with FREE FLOW unpasteurized Beer-on-tap. Exit through Gift Shop.”

BOOM. we’re naked.

Before you know it, you’re sitting in a hop & yeast soup! – warm, but not so hot as to kill the living yeast cells – and the beer-on-tap is cold, but not too cold – soaking it all in…

After a 30-min bath, you’re led to a private room, with a giant bed, where the origins of the spa and its recipe that dates back to its origins of its monastic brewing tradition in the middle ages is shared with you. By now, you might have had 5, 8 pints, who’s counting… a warmth engulfs you, in the form of an ancient tale, a bold and rich lager, and a heated bed.

You may decide to cancel your museum tour scheduled for that evening. You’re light-headed, exhausted, and happy; it’s a hypnotic and spiritual experience, all at once.

Oh, beautiful Prague.

Additional Info by DRAFT MAG: Every year, the Czech Republic achieves the world’s highest per capita beer consumption, downing about 160 liters (338 pints) for every Czech citizen, and the country is revered as the home of such immortal brewing names as pilsner and Budweiser. In addition, the Czechs have a long tradition of curative baths dating to the 18th and 19th centuries, when Old World aristocrats, luminaries and their entourages journeyed to historic spa towns like Karlovy Vary (usually known by its German name of Carlsbad) and Mariánské Lázne (a.k.a. Marienbad) to bathe in the waters to treat ailments such as rheumatism, respiratory disease and headaches.
