Chalong Bay Rum is a 100% pure Thai sugarcane juice rum distilled and bottled in Phuket, and it's really speaking to our 100% Asian tastebuds. We speak to its founder, Thibault Spithakis, and got some great recipes off him.


Let’s talk about Rum for a second.

We know it is a distilled spirit, made from sugarcane byproducts.

Now let’s talk about Sugarcane for a second. 

We know the original source of sugarcane is South East Asia, in particular Thailand.

How is it then, that majority of the world’s rum production occurs in the Carribean and Latin America? 

We’ve had this conversation before, and boy was it spirited. So you can imagine our joy when we first came across Chalong Bay Rum >> first seen at Whisky Live 2015 




and why didn’t we think of it first??? were the questions we immediately raised. Until we got a whiff and a taste of it. then we demanded an audience with the founders, and grilled them on their craft.

Chalong Bay Rum History

Blending vision and passion, our unique dream is to create truly original handcrafted rum using sustainable production that binds the traditional French art of distillation with the rich sugarcane heritage of Thailand. Using a traditional copper still imported from France and a centuries-old distillation process, Chalong Bay’s innovative craftsmanship has produced an award-winning rum of incredible character, originality and smoothness, giving full expression to the 100% natural Thai sugarcane contained within.

In our quest for authenticity we ventured to the original source of sugarcane throughout the world, South East Asia and in particular Thailand due to its exceptional richness of over 200 different varieties. After rigorous research we selected only indigenous single variety best-in-crop sugarcane, grown without chemical fertilizers, in partnership with local farmers who still harvest their crop by hand, preserving the pure essence of natural sugarcane.

These traditional methods of growing and harvesting sugarcane allow us to produce 100% natural first press cane juice that’s ready to be distilled. This organic liquid treasure is rich in character and what lends our award-winning natural rum that distinctively extra smooth tropical taste with its expressive aroma of natural purity.

OUR FAVOURITE RECIPES featuring Chalong Bay Rum

  1. Thai Fling


1 oz. simple syrup / 1 oz. fresh lime juice / 3 small slices of red chili without seeds / 1 handful of fresh mint leaves & sweet basil leaves / 2 oz. chalong bay large ice cubes

In a shaker : Slap mint, and basil leaves before adding them / Add chili, muddle gently / Add lime, simple syrup, and Chalong Bay / Shake with large ice cubes / Double strain in a chilled glass, and serve without ice

Thibault is originally from France, and now based in Chalong Bay, Phuket. With France having a long history of rum making, and Thailand being the fourth biggest producer of sugar cane in the world, it’s looking like a perfect marriage. 

Chalong Bay Rum has just been awarded at the International Wine and Spirit Competition, Hong Kong. It’s got Phuket’s DNA all over it – natural, local, merging traditions and cultures.
