THE COOPERAGE
02 Oct 2018 By David Fuhrmann-Lim
There’s A Friendly Range of Whiskies at Friendly Prices at New Joint The Cooperage – Just Don’t Ask For A Pisco Sour Here.
At the spot which used to the Vasco is now a new whiskey joint. There are some pretty good things about it, one is the cute pricing: you pay according to the age statement. A 12 year old is $12++, a 15 year old is $15++, until you reach 21. The selection is wide enough that you won’t feel shortchanged. Clever, and easy to remember.
There are also flights to try out if there’s a bunch of you and you can’t decide – this is the international flight. The 100 Years of Dalmore is worth checking out as well.
Food
The comfort food here is done with a bit of verve, and it’s pretty darn good. The prawn and scallop aglio olio ($22) is generous and savoury (Highland Park 12, simple pairing suggestion), while the Shishamo Mentai is creamy and crunchy (Glendronach 12). There’s not a lot of wallpaper on the menu, the food tends to be rich, loud and flavourful, all the better to pair with a dram.
Selection
One of the flights you will encounter.
All in all, there are more than 200 whiskies to sample. The selection is solid without too much to shout about. But the price is right, the food is good, and the location is ideal – you can’t argue with the concept.
The Cooperage, 46 Hong Kong Street.
