MUMM'S THE WORD

16 Mar 2015 By

Didier Mariotti, Cellar Master of House of G.H. MUMM, leads a tough life. which includes being in charge of the companyʼs cuvées, reproducing the House Style, and tasting some 2,000 wine samples a year. He spares us some time between sips.

Parched: So. Cellar Master eh? Sounds fancy! What’s the best and worst part about your job?

Didier M: “The best part of my job is bringing happiness and emotion to people… the worst part… hm… this is tough… I guess the worst part is that you and I, we may not share the same concept of time. For example, when I make a vintage, it is easily 6 to 7 years between harvest and enjoyment stage, you need to enjoy patience. And in this world where everything is fleeting, transient and immediate – like a Facebook wall – it is hard to explain the need for patience.”

Parched: Great champagne. Thanks. Exactly what we needed on a Parched Tuesday afternoon. Why a life in champagne?

Didier M: “Why not? You can drink champagne at any time of the day.”

Parched: True that. Santé. Glad you’re in this part of the world to share about your vintage. While we’re on the topic of this part of the world, do you think the Asian market consumes champagne any different to our European counterparts?

Didier M: “There are no rules to drinking. You can drink from a flute or a glass, with or without ice even, it’s not what I want, it’s what you want. My job is to show you the ways, and you make your own choices… You see, drinking is about freedom.”

Parched: What’s different about this collection?

Didier M: “We have launched 3 vintages, direct from the house. Usually when you think about champagne, you think celebration. But remember, this is also wine, and wine is complex; when you age it, it evolves, and new flavours and structures emerge.
