SUMMERLONG
28 Aug 2017 By David Fuhrmann-Lim
We won’t make any long puns here, it’s just a short summary of a new bar that we like.
Decked out in beechwood and driftwood, this restaurant (by the folks behind Fat Prince and Neon Pigeon) has a casual confident vibe that just invites you to chill. It’s perched at The Quayside, Robertson Quay, and its menu offers fresh and healthy food and drinks inspired by the Eastern Mediterranean. Summerlong also has a bar with some superb cocktails, priced between S$15–21.
3 Continents ($21): Four kinds of rums, plus pineapple, passionfruit, cinnamon. This is all kinds of wonderful, from the choice of rums to the balance of the fruits, shaken to a lovely froth. The black peppercorn provides a kick, the spirits do the rest. (People love this so much they leave with the coconut husk, which is a no-no.)
Pom Cos Mo ($17): Pomegranate, Cointreau, vodka and aquafaba. The chick peas puree (done in-house) adds subtle flavours and not-so-subtle textures to this twisted classic – love it. And at this price, there’s a danger to drinking too many of it. The clever use of aquafaba to replace egg whites makes this, ahem, gluten-free.
Heavenly Stars ($19): Rye, coffee bianco, Braulio amaro and spiced maple. It’s not my favourite, but then I’m not a coffee person – I get my fixes from tehs – and this is rich, malty and it lingers… like Little Finger.
So of course Head Bartender Irwan Majid made me a killer Negroni (off menu). Beautiful. Just a tip: Another to try is the Four Pillars Bloody Shiraz Gin. Not a cocktail, just a bloody good gin to have on the rocks.
The wines are handpicked from vineyards in France, Italy, Spain and Turkey. And you can order pitches to share as well, the Summerlong Spritz ($50) is made with Aperol, cava, grapefruit and soda. And summer wouldn’t be complete with a Soft Serve Ice Cream ($4).
Verdict: Will return for the refreshing cocktails, we love it long time.
