USEFUL C-WORDS FROM THE FRENCH
16 Aug 2014 By Xin Hui Helder-Eng
Parched Drinking Rule #17 clearly states: “A travel must-do, is the local brew!” So, meet “Chouchen”, an alcoholic beverage popular in Brittany, France.
It is a form of mead, made from the fermentation of honey in water. Another name given to Chouchen is hydromel, but we prefer “Chouchen” since so many magical things from France seem to begin with the letter ‘C’.
Like: croissant, cider, croque-monsieur, champagne, crêpe, crème brûlée…
As reported here: “If numerous stories tell that this drink make you lose your balance do not worry, indeed in ancient times winemakers used to blend the stingers of bees in the mixture, the poison was then having an effect on the balance of people when they were sipping Chouchen a bit too much. Nowadays this recipe is done without the presence of stingers. It is a particularly fine and tasty French traditional drink that all visitors in Brittany should savour and enjoy.”
We can only say we agree with the last part.
Tip: Chouchen is best consumed really chilled as an aperitif, or as a digestive drink.
Santé!
