5 Things You Should Know About the New Extra Old Extra Brut Veuve Clicquot.
Veuve Clicquot launches an entirely new auteur wine: Extra Brut Extra Old, a premium cuvee blended exclusively from its precious reserve wines. Here’s what you need to know. 1 The Blend
Veuve Clicquot Extra Brut Extra Old is made only of reserve wines, from the years 1988, 1996, 2006, 2008, 2009 and 2010, chosen for their freshness, generosity and structure. Cellar Master Dominique Demarville created this blend to capture the spirit of Yellow Label, rendering it with a vibrancy, depth and purity.
2 The Aging
The wines have been aged a minimum of three years in vats, on the lees. Then another turn of aging comes in Extra Brut Extra Old bottles, which mature in the cellars for another three years before disgorgement.
3 The Essence
Demarville has brought its purest essence into sharp focus with this blend: a double-aged champagne with a very low dosage and a fine golden effervescence. The bub has an ultra low-dosage despite its richness, and the generous contribution of the reserve wines used in its composition.
4 The Wines
1998: Has aged well, while still fresh with a delicate pop taste.
1996: Was a very good vintage in champagne, with smoky and spicy notes, and honey and creamy flavours. Pure pinot grapes.
2006: Also a pure pinot noir with full bodied ginger and honey notes.
2008: Another great year for champagnes, this one provided the acidity and lightness. Pure chard grapes.
2009: 100% pinot, with a bit more complexity and structure, and also more creamy than the rest.
2010: A young one with fresh citrus and floral notes, and big sugars. Pure Meunier grapes.
5 The Verdict
You know how super groups are: Crosby, Still, Nash and Young was a smash, while Chickenfoot didn’t exactly rock the world. It takes delicate nuances and the right chemistry to get the balance right when you blend old and new. So this Extra Brut Extra Old is Them Crooked Vultures (Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters, Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age and John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin). A propulsive mix of experience and energy: it’s ripe, toasty, creamy and fresh. Definitely one that’ll climb the charts. We like.
It’s $110 SGD for a 75cl bottle, Veuve Clicquot Extra Brut Extra Old is also available as a magnum bottle and can be purchased exclusively through Cru World Wine.
