This is Penfolds’ first new range in over a decade, and the very first named for a winemaker. Specifically, Max Schubert, their legendary and innovative winemaker of 37 years. Yes, you’re probably not familiar with the name (more of him below but watch the intro video here), but these wines are approachable, in popular styles and are meant to be enjoyed now.

The three wines are all 2014 and include a Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and of course – Australia’s great contribution to the wine world – a Shiraz Cabernet (above).

The range celebrates the winemaking legend renowned for his innovative spirit and vision, together with his immense influence on Penfolds house style. The trio of wines were created by the winemaking team to be more accessible for immediate enjoyment, and approachable as a younger wine because of its vibrant fruit qualities (they are all pretty intense, fruity and less tannic, from our initial tasting). 1 – He joined Penfolds as a messenger at the age of 16.

2 – He became their chief winemaker at 33. Yes, 33!

4 – Schubert is best known as the creator of Australia’s flagship red – Penfolds Grange – which he made in secret for three years.

5 – He mastered the art of multiregional blending and nurtured the spirit of innovation which continues to this day.

6 – Credited with the creation of Penfolds Bin wines beginning with Kalimna Bin 28 Shiraz in 1959.

7 – In 2001, Max was included in the 100 Most Influential Australians of the Century publication.
